The Port of Shimizu handled 44,177 TEUs of containers in September, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Shizuoka Prefectural Government’s Shimizu Port Authority. The port marked a double-digit throughput increase of 13.7% from the same month of 2020 and a year-on-year improvement for the eighth month in a row since February. Containers to and from other economies accounted for 36,292 TEUs, which also enjoyed a double-digit expansion, surging 18.1%, and grew year on year for six straight months. The remaining 7,885 TEUs were those moved to and from other domestic ports, which fell 2.7%.

Looking at foreign-trade shipments, exports of loaded containers registered a double-digit rise of 10.3% to amount to 14,316 TEUs. Imports also make a double-digit improvement, soaring 12.1% to come to 17,140 TEUs. Consequently, they totaled 31,456 TEUs, up 11.3%. Meanwhile, empty containers almost doubled, skyrocketing 95.5% to 4,836 TEUs in total.

In January-September, Shimizu processed a total of 420,982 TEUs, up 13.3% from the corresponding term of last year. International containers hiked 6.4% to 334,685 TEUs, while domestic containers increased more than 50%; more specifically, they jumped 51.5% to 86,297 TEUs.
