A total of 895,700 TEUs of export and import, transshipment (T/S) and feeder containers were traded between Japan and South Korea in the first half (January-June) of 2021, up 2% year on year, according to statistics compiled by the Korea Nearsea Freight Conference (KNFC).

Exports from Japan to South Korea enjoyed a double-digit increase of 15%, amounting to 166,400 TEUs. On the other hand, imports from South Korea to Japan, which remained on a downward trend for four months in a row but turned upward in June, growing 9% from the same month of 2020, fell 1% to 171,800 TEUs. The ratio of exports to imports, as a result, improved to a more balanced 49 to 51, although it had once been 45 to 55.

On the trade route, 557,400 TEUs were transshipped, down 1%, including 404,300 TEUs carried to and from third economies, up 2%. Containers moved in feeder services, however, dwindled 8% to 153,100 TEUs.

In July, Japan exported and imported 148,100 TEUs to and from South Korea in total, up 7%. They gained momentum in both directions, with the former surging 14% to 29,200 TEUs and the latter, 38% to 29,100 TEUs. In contrast, T/S containers stayed sluggish, sinking 2% to 89,800 TEUs.
