Container trade between Japan and China was robust in both directions in March, according to numerical values calculated by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). Outbound shipments from Japan to China surged 20.9% to 957,795 tons, while inbound containers from China to Japan swelled a milder 4.6% to 1,803,326 tons. In terms of value, exports from Japan surged 40.9% to ¥909.6 billion, enjoying a year-on-year improvement for the fourth month in a row. Imports to Japan also accomplished a double-digit increase of 15.1% to amount to ¥1.068 trillion.

In the first quarter (January-March), Japan exported a total of 2.291 million tons of shipments to China, up 13.9%, and imported 5.116 million tons in total from China, up 13.5%, the JMC said, referring to trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF). Exports were valued at ¥2.167 trillion, up 26.6%, and imports, ¥3.2 trillion, up 22.9%.
