Container exports to the U.S. from 10 major countries and regions in Asia surged 16.8% to 1,683,298 TEUs in January, enjoying a year-on-year increase for eight months in a row and setting a new record for the month in question, American research company Descartes Datamyne unveiled recently.

By origin, containers from China soared 19.4% to 1,006,103 TEUs, swelling year on year for the eighth consecutive month and holding the largest share of the pie. As for exports from other economies, those from South Korea jumped 11.8% to 164,410 TEUs; from Vietnam, 13.4% to 136,368 TEUs; and from Singapore 29.1% to 80,893 TEUs. In contrast, containers from Taiwan plunged 14.3% to 78,965 TEUs. Exports from Japan improved 7.8% to 46,850 TEUs, finishing in ninth place.

Meanwhile, imports from the U.S. to Asia fell 2.2% to 490,174 TEUs in December. In full-year total, they amounted to 5,910,648 TEUs in 2020, down 1.3%, almost recovering their 2019 level. Looking at 2020 imports from top, those to China swelled 8.8% to 1,952,421 TEUs. To Taiwan, on the other hand, they diminished 5.1% to 580,802 TEUs; to South Korea, 7.1% to 665,655 TEUs; and to Japan, 8.4% to 683,053 TEUs. Containers to Vietnam improved 1% to 508,948 TEUs.
