The Port of Tokyo processed a total of 248,388 TEUs of loaded oceangoing containers in August, down 7.4% from a year earlier, according to preliminary statistics unveiled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. In breakdown, export containers numbered 71,202 TEUs, improving a mild 1.9%, but imports incurred a double-digit contraction, plunging 10.7% to 177,186 TEUs. Meanwhile, exports and imports of empty containers totaled 97,326 TEUs, down 5.3%.
In the first eight months (January-August), full containers amounted to 2,046,868 TEUs in total, down 6.1%. Exports accounted for 561,377 TEUs, down 6.9%, and imports, 1,485,491 TEUs, down 5.8%. Empties fell 1% to a total of 783,273 TEUs.
