Outbound containers from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 39,289 TEUs in August, which improved 3.9% from the previous month but plunged 29.4% from the corresponding month of 2019, according to Descartes Datamyne. In breakdown, 30,192 TEUs were exported directly from Japan the U.S., down 25.3% from a year earlier. Meanwhile, 9,097 TEUs were transshipped in other economies, down 40.5%, which included 6,183 TEUs transshipped in South Korea, down 40.4%.

Looking at direct exports from Japan to the U.S. by port of origin indicates that major ports all suffered negative growth. Containers from Tokyo, for example, sank 20% year on year to 16,210 TEUs but managed to enjoy the leading share of the pie. Finishing in second place, those from Nagoya also plummeted, going down 15.2% to 9,189 TEUs. Nagoya was followed by Kobe, from which 6,467 TEUs were moved, down 3.3%. Ranked fourth were exports from Yokohama, which decreased a more notable 74.7% to 420 TEUs. Those from Shimizu shrank 61.2% to 301 TEUs, finishing in fourth place. At the bottom of Big Six was Osaka, which exported 221 TEUs, down 51.5%.
