Outbound containers to the U.S. from 10 major countries and regions in Asia decreased 4.2% from a year earlier to a total of 1,295,613 TEUs in June, according to Miami-based data provider Descartes Datamyne. Exports from China grew 0.2% to 816,798 TEUs, accomplishing the first year-on-year improvement in 17 months, but those from the other nine economies diminished across the board. In the first half (January-June), 7,193,000 TEUs were moved on the trade route in total, down 8.4%.
Looking at first-half container movement by origin, containers from China plunged 12.8% to 3,979,907 TEUs but managed to hold the largest share of the pie. Those from South Korea fell 3.6% to 857,633 TEUs, finishing in second place. Exports from Taiwan waned 3.7% to 479,046 TEUs, which came in fourth. At the bottom of the top five were those from Singapore, which shrank 0.3% to 347,007 TEUs. Ranked third were containers from Vietnam, which, in contrast, surged 19.8% to 557,383 TEUs. Exports from Japan, which was the seventh-largest source of U.S.-bound shipments, plummeted 17.5% to 205,913 TEUs.
