Container exports from Japan to the U.S. amounted to 55,107 TEUs in April 2020 (based on volumes at ports of origin), down 5.7% from April 2019 and 2.4% from March 2020, according to statistics compiled by American research company Descartes Datamyne. Direct shipments from Japan accounted for 41,224 TEUs, down 1.6% from a year earlier. Transshipment (T/S) containers from Japan totaled 13,883 TEUs, down 2.8%, 16.3% of which were transshipped in South Korea and 25.2% in other Asian economies.

Looking at direct containers from Japan more closely by port, the statistics, compiled from Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) and bill-of-lading (B/L) data provided by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), indicated that those from Tokyo fell 0.3% to 20,436 but managed to hold the largest share of the pie. As for those from other ports, Nagoya was responsible for 10,820 TEUs, down 7.7%; Kobe, 7,432 TEUs, up 8.4%; and Yokohama, 1,069 TEUs, down 36.9%.
