The outbreak of the coronavirus disrupted container traffic at major container ports in Asia in February and Shanghai port faced a nearly 20 percent drop in box throughput while the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reported a positive growth in volumes at the port of Singapore.
Shanghai International Port (Group) has said it handled 229.8 million TEUs in February, representing a double-digit decline of 19.5% compared to 285.5 million TEUs in the same month of 2019. For the first two months, box traffic fell 10.6% to 6.607 million TEUs.
According to MPA, the port handled 2.90 million TEUs in February 2020, up 5.8% year-on-year. For the first two months, volumes were up 5.9% at 6.08 million TEUs compared to 5.74 million TEUs in the same period a year earlier.
