South California ports suffered declines in container volumes in November due to the U.S.-China trade war which continues to negatively impact American consumers, manufacturers and U.S. supply chain jobs.

The Port of Los Angeles moved 728,918 TEUs in November, a 12.4% decrease compared to last year. After 11 months of 2019, total volumes have increased 0.4% compared to 2018, which was the busiest year on record.

November imports decreased 12.2% to 371,350 TEUs compared to the previous year. Exports declined 9.2% to 138,545 TEUs, the 13th consecutive monthly decline of exports. Empty containers also declined 14.8% to 219,024 TEUs. Combined, November volumes were 728,918 TEUs.

By the same token, cargo volumes dropped 3.5% at the Port of Long Beach in November as restrictive tariffs continued to drag on the national supply chain.

Dockworkers moved 599,985 TEUs last month, 3.5% less than the same month last year. Imports slid 8.3% to 293,287 TEUs, while exports were up 6.9% to 123,705 TEUs. Empty containers headed overseas decreased 1.7% to 182,992 TEUs.

Dockworkers moved 6,966,771 TEUs during the first 11 months of 2019, putting the port on track for its second-busiest year and 5.2% down from last year's record-setting pace.
