Japan International Freight Forwarders Association Inc. (JIFFA)’s Forwarding Committee recently released a report on the volume of multimodal shipments handled by affiliated freight forwarders in the first half (April-September) of fiscal 2019. JIFFA conducted a survey among its regular members. Valid responses were made by 468, from which the report was compiled.

As for multimodal shipments that JIFFA member freight forwards moved in April-September, exports from Japan fell 2.5% year on year to 23.923 million revenue tons. Imports to Japan, meanwhile, shrank a very minutely from a year earlier, going down 0.03% to 38.953 million revenue tons. In total, they decreased 1% to 62.876 million revenue tons. On a six-month basis, it was the second largest volume after the 63.508 million revenue tons registered in the first half of fiscal 2018.

In terms of TEU, exports from Japan totaled 1,004,353 TEUs and imports to Japan, 1,514,482 TEUs for a total of 2,518,835 TEUs.
