The Port of New York and New Jersey achieved an all-time monthly record in August. Monthly total volume for August 2019 was 679,585 TEUs, a 4.3 percent increase over August 2018, which posted 651,752 TEUs. The record-breaking August numbers brought the total volume for the year to 4,995,420 TEUs.

Import loads rose by 2.7 percent in August 2019 versus the previous year, totaling 342,541 TEUs versus 333,567 TEUs in August 2018. For the period of January through August 2019, imported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey reached 2,525,575 TEUs, a 4.7 percent increase over the same period of 2018, which posted 2,413,228 TEUs.

Export loads increased by 1.7 percent in August 2019 compared to August 2018. Export loads for August totaled 127,237 TEUs versus 125,115 TEUs in August 2018, a 1.7 percent increase in TEU volume. From January through August 2019, exported loads at the Port of New York and New Jersey decreased by 1.1 percent, reaching 986,770 TEUs versus 997,945 TEUs for the same period of 2018.

Export empties increased by 8.5 percent in August, totaling 207,875 TEUs versus 191,521 TEUs for August 2018. Export empties totaled 1,471,678 TEUs for January through August 2019 versus 1,302,572 TEUs in the same period of 2018, a 13 percent increase.

Rail volume at the port rose by 4.3 percent from the previous year's August figure, totaling 60,212 containers for August 2019. Year to date rail volume also rose by 4.3 percent compared to the same period of 2018.
