A total of 22.62 million TEUs of containers were handled at ports in China in August, which managed to hike 4.5% from a year earlier amid tangled economic situations across the globe, the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT) announced on Sept. 20. Consistent growth was, however, maintained despite the fact that throughput decreased by 150,000 TEUs from July, and year-on-year shrank from 6.9%. Breaking down the total container lifting, coastal ports were responsible for 20.04 million TEUs, up 4.3%, and inland river ports, 2.59 million TEUs, up 6%.

In the first eight months (January-August), 172.39 million TEUs were moved to and from China, up 5%. Coastal ports handled 152.78 million TEUs, up 4.3%, while containers to and from inland river ports were more brisk, surging 10.3% to 19.61 million TEUs.

Looking at year-on-year improvements registered at the top 10 coastal ports, Qingdao marked the largest increase of 9.6%. Qingdao was followed by Tianjin, which accomplished a rise of 7.2%. In contrast, container movement to Yingkou and Dalian was both sluggish, suffering double-digit contractions of 12% and 11.6%, respectively.
