The World Container Index assessed by Drewry, a composite of container freight rates on 8 major routes to/from the U.S., Europe and Asia is up 6.4% to $1,405.46 per 40ft container, updated Thursday, August 1m 2019.

The average composite index for the year to date was $1,447 per 40ft container, $7 higher than the 5-year average of $1,440 per 40ft container.

The spot rates on Shanghai to Rotterdam surged by 10% or $132 to $1,488 for a 40ft box last week. Similarly, the transpacific trade also achieved positive growth. The WCI on Shanghai - Los Angeles and Shanghai - New York rose by another 8% ($124) and 7% ($198) to reach $1,590 and $2,925, respectively.
On the transatlantic trade, the freight rate from New York to Rotterdam took an upturn by 1% ($5) to reach $1,488 per FEU.
