The Port of Osaka handled 172,971 TEUs of containers in May, decreasing 4% and suffering the first year-on-year contraction in three months, according to an announcement made by the city of Osaka’s Port and Harbor Bureau. Exports of loaded containers plunged 13% to 32,290 TEUs, and imports decreased a much milder 2% to 94,071 TEUs. Empty containers fell 2% to 94,071 TEUs in total.

In the first five months (January-May), 863,532 TEUs were moved to and from Osaka, growing 2% from a year earlier. In breakdown, 166,552 TEUs of full containers were exported, declining 4%, and 461,013 TEUs were imported. Empties swelled 7% to a total of 235,967 TEUs.
