Ports in China handled a total of 60.33 million TEUs of containers in the first quarter (January-March) of 2019, up 6.1% year on year, according to statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). Container throughput increased at both coastal and inland river ports, with the former rising 4.9% to 53.79 million TEUs, and the latter, 17.4% to 6.53 million TEUs.

Of the top 10 coastal ports, container lifting improved more than 8% at Guangzhou, up 8.8%; Qingdao, up 8.6%; and Xiamen, up 8.1%. Containers to and from Shanghai were also brisk, increasing 6.9%; in contrast, those to Dalian fell 4.8% and to Yingkou, 10.2%.
