Container exports from Japan to China grew 0.1% to 941,330 tons in December 2018, recording a year-on-year improvement for four months in a row, according to statistics unveiled on Feb. 22 by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). In terms of value, on the other hand, they fell 8.1% to \744.8 billion, suffering the first year-on-year contraction in three months.

The JMC statistics, which had been compiled from trade data provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF), indicated that imports from China to Japan decreased 2.4% to 1,854,471 tons, incurring the first year-on-year decline in four months. On a value scale, in contrast, they climbed 1% to \1.142 trillion, enjoying year-on-year growth for five straight months.

On a full-year basis, containers from Japan to China declined 2.1% to 11,288,000 tons, which were valued at \8.748 trillion, up 7%. Those from China to Japan, meanwhile, rose 0.6% to 22,368,000 tons, amounting to \13.476 trillion in value, up 3.9%.
