Ports in China handled a total of 22.16 million TEUs of containers in January, up 7.8% year on year, according to statistics compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). In breakdown, coastal ports were responsible for 19.73 million TEUs, up 6.1%, while the remaining 2.43 million TEUs were moved to and from inland river ports, up 24.1%.

Looking at container throughput at coastal ports individually, Shanghai processed 3.75 million TEUs, u 6.8%, holding the leading share of the pie. Shanghai was followed by Ningbo-Zhoushan, where 26 million TEUs were loaded and unloaded, up 9.3%. Finishing in third place, Shenzhen handled 2.41 million TEUs, up 1.8%. Ranked fourth was Guangzhou, to and from which 1.9 million TEUs were moved, up 6.1%. Coming in fifth, Qingdao processed 1.76 million TEUs, up 8.4%.
