The volume of containerized shipments handled from Jan. 1, 2018 at the Port of Incheon in South Korea reached 3 million TEUs on Dec. 19, eight days earlier than in 2017, according to the Incheon Port Authority (IPA).

Not only did container movement increase on existing routes, but a total of three new trades were opened in July and November, at a time when there were several negative external conditions, such as the trade conflict between the U.S. and China and the economic sanctions the U.S. has imposed against Iran, the IPA said to unveiling factors behind the achievement. Also, active marketing efforts steadily increased shipments traded to and from Vietnam, Thailand and other economies. Container throughput on oceangoing routes totaled 102,031 TEUs in January-November, growing a notable 48.5% year on year, the port authority added.

In the first 11 months, containers to and from China only rose 1.6% to 1,691,325 TEUs. In contrast, shipments to and from Vietnam surged 17.3% to 288,885 TEUs, while those to and from Thailand were also brisk, up 9.1% to 119,024 TEUs. Containers processed at Incheon, which once depended on the China trade, have become diversified.
