A total of 13,668,593 TEUs of containers were traded worldwide in September, which grew 4% from a year earlier and achieved a year-on-year improvement for the 12th consecutive month, according to statistics compiled by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K. From a month earlier, however, the total throughput shrank 3.9%. The global freight rate index (2008 average=100 points) was 68 points, down by one from 69 points in August, but remained unchanged from September 2017, when it was 68 points.

By major trade, exports from the Far East swelled 5.1% to 7,919,435 TEUs, while imports to the region were also brisk, rising 2.6% to 5,125,846 TEUs. Europe imported 2,730,878 TEUs, up 7.3%, but its exports were sluggish, falling 5.5% to 2,324,193 TEUs. Imports to North America hiked 6.9% to 2,507,867 TEUs, but its exports waned 4% to 1,189,757 TEUs.
