Heavy rain in areas along the upper stream of the Chang Jiang has raised the water level at the Three Gorges Dam, according to Chinese shipping line sources. To ensure safety, ship navigations on the river are regulated. As a consequence, there are lengthy delays in the operation of barges to and from Yubin, Luzhou, Chongqing and other ports located above the dam, as they are waiting to pass through it. Currently, a total of some 1,200 barges heading for both directions are forced to wait. It takes as long as 15 days just to pass through the dam now.
