Japan's waste paper exports fell 4.6% year on year to 338,864 tons in April, according to a report that the Japan Paper Exporters’ Association (JPEA) compiled from trade statistics provided by the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

By destination, exports to China diminished 9.3% to 228,222 tons, as Beijing had enhanced its import restrictions on recyclable resources. They accounted for some 70% of the pie. In contrast, those to Southeast Asia increase remarkably across the board, as countries in the regions became major destinations. Exports to Malaysia ballooned 8.7-fold to 5,132 tons. Those to Vietnam were up 12.2% to 30,026 tons, and to Thailand, up 21.2% to 26,832 tons. Exports to Indonesia surged 2.9-fold to 18,250 tons.
