Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., South Korea's biggest shipping line, said it will place an order for 12 over 20,000TEU and eight 14,000TEU ships with domestic shipbuilders in the second quarter as part of its effort to expand its services for deploying in Asia/Europe and East coast of US trade
respectively.

Hyundai Merchant will select a shipbuilder or a couple of builders by June this year.

The company sent a request for a proposal to Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Samsung Heavy Industries Co. and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Industry. Estimating the entire deal will be around 3 trillion won, about US$3 billion.

The 12 of 20,000 TEU vessels would be deployed to the Asia-North Continent routes and the eight of 14,000 TEU box ships would be operated on the routes in Asia to East coast of US.

As the International Maritime Organization, IMO, will only allow vehicles using fuel that contains a maximum 0.5 percent of SOx starting Jan. 1, 2020, HMM's new ships either equipped with the latest Scrubber system or operating on LNG burn main engine.
