Container exports from Japan to China decreased 5.1% from a year earlier to 899,006 tons in October, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC). They suffered a year-on-year decline for the second consecutive month due to falls in wood pulp/waste paper and plastic products. In terms of value, in contrast, they surged 28.4% to \749.1 billion, enjoying a double-digit improvement for nine months in a row.

Meanwhile, imports from China to Japan rose 0.5% to 1.724 million tons, registering the first year-on-year expansion in two months. They were valued at \1.054 trillion, growing from a year earlier for six straight months.

As for freight rates in the month in question (according to indices unveiled by Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd.), containers were moved from Yokohama to Shanghai at $380 per TEU, which went down 2.6%, while fates for those from Shanghai to Yokohama were $610 per TEU, up 5.2%.
