Trade ports in South Korea processed a total of 132.34 million tons of cargo in July, which increased 3.7% from the 127.67 million tons that they handled a year earlier, according to an announcement made on Aug. 29 by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF). Containerized shipments amounted to 2.336 million TEUs, which grew 3.1% from 2.265 million TEUs. In breakdown, exports and imports accounted for 1.407 million TEUs, which improved 5%, and transshipment (T/S) containers, 911,000 TEUs, which hiked 0.7%.

Focusing on container throughput at leading ports, Busan was responsible for 1.752 million TEUs, which swelled 3%. Exports and imports were brisk thanks to continued increases in container movement to and from major trade partners, climbing 5.3% to 878,000 TEUs. By country and region, containers to and from China went up 10.4%; to and from Japan, up 3.8%; to and from the U.S., up 1.6%; to and from Russia, up 23.6% and to and from Europe, up 4.4%. T/S cargo inflated 0.8% to 874,000 TEUs, as services had been stabilized since alliances were realigned.
