Container throughput at trade ports in South Korea increased 8.5% year on year to 2.36 million TEUs from 2.175 million TEUs in May, according to an announcement made by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Exports and imports swelled 8% to 1.395 million TEUs in total, while transshipment (T/S) containers were even more brisk, growing 9.5% to 946,000 TEUs.

In the first five months (January-May), the ports handled a total of 11.239 million TEUs, which improved 5.3% from the corresponding months of 2016.

Looking at containers transported to and from South Korea in May by port, Busan processed 1.787 million TEUs, which inflated 9.4%. Exports and imports rose 9.1% to 885,000 TEUs, and T/S containers were as favorable, climbing 9.8% to 885,000 TEUs.

Containers to and from Inchon surged a notable 17% to 254,000 TEUs, thanks to increases in exports to and imports from China. In contrast, container lifting was sluggish at Kwangyang, which went down 4.9% to 182,000 TEUs.
