The International Auto Trade Association (iATA) recently announced that a total of 117,191 used passenger cars, cargo carriers and buses were exported from Japan in March, which increased 6.7% from a year earlier and enjoyed a year-on-year improvement for the fifth consecutive month.

The association added in a report that it had compiled from trade statistics unveiled by the Ministry of Finance (MOF) that in the first quarter (January-March), 293,687 such units were shipped out of Japan in total, which grew 4.6% from the corresponding three months of 2016.

Looking at exports from Japan of secondhand vehicles in March by destination, those to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) climbed 3.9% to 14,674 units, accounting for the largest part of the pie. Ranked second places were those to New Zealand, which surged 12.4% to 14,168 units. They were the only two economies to which more than 10,000 units were exported. Used vehicles to Chile, which finished in third, soared 24.9% to 9,267 units; in contrast, those to Myanmar plunged 36.4% to 8,451 units, which came in fourth. The fifth greatest destination was Kenya, to which 6,985 units were moved, jumping 79.7%. Exports to Pakistan, South Africa and Russia all registered double-digit increases, going up 26.1% to 6,356 units, up 64.8% to 5,743 units and up 85.3% to 5,343 units, respectively.
