China’s Ministry of Transport (MOT) recently unveiled in a report it had compiled that ports in the nation handled a total of 11.83 billion tons of shipments in 2016, which increased 3.2% from the pervious year. Exports and imports accounted for 3.762 billion tons in total, which improved 4.1%. In breakdown, coastal ports processed 3.373 billion tons, which went up 3.7%, while the balance of 388.37 million tons were moved to and from inland river ports, up 7.7%. Containerized shipments amounted to 217.98 million TEUs, up 3.6%. Those to and from coastal and inland river ports both enjoyed positive growth, hiking 3.4% to 194.44 million TEUs and 6% to 23.56 million TEUs, respectively.

Looking more closely at container throughput at coastal port, Shanghai handled 37.13 million TEUs, up 1.6%, finishing in first place. Containers lifting decreased 0.4% to 24.11 million TEUs at Shenzhen, but it managed to come in second. Ningbo-Zhoushan mounted a charge by processing 21.57 million TEUs, up 4.6%, but continued to rank at third place. The lineup of the top three remained unchanged. Throughput improved 6.8% to 18.58 million TEUs at Guangzhou, which enjoyed a greater year-on-year increase than any other major port and moved up by a notch to finish in fourth place. Containers swelled 3.3% to 18.01 million tons at Qingdao, but it went down from fourth to fifth place.
