Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K. recently unveiled that a total of 153.706 million TEUs of containers were traded worldwide in 2016, which increased 3.74% from a year earlier to reach an all-time high.

By region, imports to Asia increased 4.59% to 60.855 million TEUs, while its exports rose 3.66% to 87.213 million TEUs. Europe imported 29.967 million TEUs, which went up 2.08%, and exported 26.277 million TEUs, up 2.11%. Containers to North America swelled 5.92% to 2.098 million TEUs, while those from the region grew 3.41% to 15.467 million TEUs. Imports to and exports from the major continents were all greater in volume than they were in 2015.

Imports to the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East hiked 3.34% to 16.59 million TEUs in total, while those from the areas increased 5.35% to 11.189 million TEUs. Central and South America imported 9.658 million TEUs, which went down 0.13%, and exported 8.026 million TEUs, up 3.52%. More specifically, containers to Brazil fell 5.92% to 2.098 million TEUs, but those from the nation claimed 6.82% to 2.69 million TEUs.

As for other regions, exports from Sub-Saharan Africa declined 0.46% to 2.733 million TEUs, while imports to the region decreased 3.66% to 6.553 million TEUs. Imports to Australia and Oceania were steady, growing 9.06% to 4.42 million TEUs, while those from the regions rose 7.12% to 2.901 million TEUs.
