The Port of Tokyo handled a total of 42.43 million tons of international and domestic shipments in the first half (January-June) of this year, which remained nearly unchanged from a year earlier, just growing a very minute 0.7%, according to a preliminary report unveiled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’ Bureau of Port and Harbor. Oceangoing cargo increased 4.3% to 23.73 million tons, but domestic cargo fell 3.7% to 18.7 million tons. As for containers, 22.74 million tons were exported and imported, which rose 4.1%. Meanwhile, 1.208 million tons were traded domestically, which waned 2.1%. In terms of number, the total of loaded and unloaded exports and imports increased a slight 2.3% to 2.056 million TEUs.

Container exports declined 0.4% to 6.2 million tons. Containers to China sank 3.3%, but those to the U.S. improved 3.6%. Meanwhile, imports increased 5.9% to 16.537 million tons. Those from China remained nearly unchanged, but those from the U.S. surged 22.4% and from Thailand, they grew a much milder 2.9%. On a TEU scale, outbound oceangoing containers rose 2.6% to 951,000 TEUs, while imports hiked 2% to 1.105 million TEUs.
