Trade ports in South Korea processed a total of 124.46 million tons of cargo in May, which increased 1.4% from a year earlier, according to the economy’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Containerized shipments amounted to 2.168 million TEUs, which decreased 0.9% from 2.188 million TEUs. Export and import containers accounted for 1.286 million TEUs in total, which went up 1.4%, and transshipment (T/S) containers, 863,000 TEUs, down 4.3%.

Looking at containers moved to and from South Korea last month by port, Busan handled 1.63 million TEUs. The port suffered a year-on-year decrease of 1% in throughput, but it was milder than the 2.9% registered in March and the 5.2% in April. Exports and imports came back to improve 0.3% to 810,000 TEUs in total. T/S shipments totaled 821,000 TEUs, which rose 3.9% from a year earlier but sank 2.4% from a month earlier

Kwangyang was responsible for 190,000 TEUs, which plunged 13.3% from May 2015. Export and import containers diminished 5.3% to 151,000 TEUs, while T/S containers plummeted a much more significant 34.6% to 39,000 TEUs.

Container throughput was favorable at Inchon, growing 6.1% year on year to 214,000 TEUs, as exports to and imports from Vietnam remained on an upward trend.
