The Japan Maritime Center (JMC) has unveiled that container exports from Japan to China plunged 17.3% year on year in terms of volume to 745,362 tons and 22.8% in terms of value to \429.9 billion in January. The JMC, which had complied a report on container movement between Japan and China with the Ministry of Finance (MOF)’s trade statistics, added that import from China to Japan were also weak, diminishing 9.1% to 1,826,786 tons in volume and 11.6% to \1.18 trillion in value.

Freight rates for containers from Yokohama to Shanghai, which had fluctuated around US$350 per TEU, fell all the way to a record low of $330 per TEU in December 2015. Meanwhile, those for containers from Shanghai to Yokohama began to increase again in February, although they had been on the decline since November last year.
