The Port of Shanghai handled 2.59 million TEUs of containers in February, which grew a mere 0.8% year on year from 2.574 million TEUs, according to a report compiled by Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG). From a month earlier, when the port processed 2.94 million TEUs, throughput was down 11.9%. In the first two months, containers totaled 5.53 million TEUs, which fell 3.5% from 5.73 million TEUs.

To and from Singapore, 2.41 million TEUs were moved last month, declining 7.7% from 2.61 million TEUs, which registered a year-on-year decrease for the 12th consecutive month. Accumulated container throughput in January and February was sluggish, too, which amounted to 4.9 million TEUs, down 9.1% from 5.39 million TEUs.

Hong Kong did not perform well in February, either. In the month in question, it handled 1.213 million TEUs, which was a double-digit contraction of 16% from a year earlier and a year-on-year fall for 15 months in a row. Container lifting in the first two months was 2.859 million TEUs, down 12.5%, showing no sign of keeping the downward trend from going worse.
