The Port of Tokyo exported 6.475 million tons of shipments in the first half (January-June) of 2015, declining 1.4% year on year, according to cargo statistics (preliminary figures) unveiled by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG)’s Bureau of Port and Harbor. The decline was caused by sluggishness in those to China (including Hong Kong), South Korea and other destinations. Meanwhile, imports also decreased, going down 8.8% to 16.267 million tons, due to falls in shipments to China (including Hong Kong), the U.S. and other sources. In total, Tokyo handled 22.74 million tons, down 6.8%.

Focusing on oceangoing containers, exports fell 1.3% to 6.227 million tons, while imports diminished 8% to 15.61 million tons. Imports, which hold a considerable share in Tokyo’s total cargo throughput, were week across the board, with those from the U.S. down 16.7%; from China, down 8.9%; from Thailand, down 5.5%; from South Korea, down 11.8% and from Vietnam, down 3.1%. The total of exports and imports amounted to 21.84 million tons, down 6.9%.

In terms of number, seaborne international containers waned 8% to 2.01 million TEUs. In breakdown, outbound shipments sank 8.5% to 927,000 TEUs, while inbound containers headed south 7.5% to 1.083 million TEUs.
