Container throughput in May at major Asian ports has been unveiled. Containers increased steadily at Shanghai, but Singapore and Hong Kong both suffered negative growth.

Shanghai handled 3.16 million TEUs, rising 4.7% year on year from 3.02 million TEUs. The Chinese port performed well in the first five months (January-May) as well, processing 14.95 million TEUs on an accumulated scale, improving 4.2% from 14.35 million TEUs.

On the other hand, container lifting at Singapore plunged 10.9% to 2.623 million TEUs in May, incurring a year-on-year decrease for the third consecutive month. The port failed to stop the volume of containerized shipment it handles from going down. From the beginning of the year, containers totaled 13.38 million TEUs, falling 2.1%.

Containers to and from Hong Kong plummeted 12.7% to 1.737 million TEUs in May. It suffered a throughput decrease from the previous year for 11 straight months and a double-digit decline for three consecutive months. In the first five months, containers totaled 8.359 million TEUs, going down 9.4%.
