Trade ports in South Korea handled a total of 2.114 million TEUs of containers in April, growing 2.7% year on year, according to a report compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. Exports and imports accounted for 1.265 million TEUs, going up 0.2%, while transshipment (T/S) cargo totaled 886,000 TEUs, up 5.7%. Accumulated container throughput was steady in the first four months (January-April), improving 4.4% from the corresponding term of 2014.
In April, Busan, the leading container port in South Korea, processed 1.642 million TEUs, climbing 3.5%. Oceangoing shipments amounted to 807,000 TEUs, going up 1.6%. T/S containers totaled 835,000 TEUs, which improved 5.4% to reach a monthly high.
Meanwhile, 205,000 TEUs were moved to and from Kwangyang, which remained nearly unchanged from a year earlier. Export and import containers fell 3.3% to 157,000 TEUs; on the other hand, T/S cargo was brisk, surging 12.5% to 48,000 TEUs.
Throughput at Inchon hiked 1% to 200,000 TEUs thanks to increases in exports to and import from South Asian economies.
