Trade unions in Belgium have been staging a series of strikes in protest of the government's cost cutting measures.

The strikes have paralyzed the nation's largest container port Antwerp with the ports of Zeebrugge and Ghent also affected adversely.

Unions are expected to continue 24-hour strikes every Monday until December 15 when the general strike is planned.
