Combined volume of containerized shipments moved by major shipping lines among 12 Asian economies increased 5.1% year on year from 1.231 million TEUs to 1.295 million TEUs in June. Exports from Japan went down 4.2% to 162,000 TEUs, and imports to Japan, down 9.9% to 176,000 TEUs.

In the first half (January-June), container throughput on the intra-Asia trade grew 5.0% to 7.26 million TEUs. Shipments from Japan went up 0.4% to 920,000 TEUs, and those to Japan, up 3.4% to 1.152 million TEUs.

Looking at containers exported from Japan in the six months by destination, those to Taiwan surged 39% to 133,000 TEUs. Shipments to Indonesia went up 6% to 52,000 TEUs; to Vietnam, up 12.1% to 43,000 TEUs; to the Philippines, up 8.4% to 28,000 TEUs; to Singapore, up 10.6% to 25,000 TEUs; and to Malaysia, up a minute 0.1% to 45,000 TEUs.

On the other hand, exports to China went down 7.3% to 335,000 TEUs; to Thailand, down 11% to 95,000 TEUs; to South Korea, down 5.7% to 81,000 TEUs; to Hong Kong, down 2.4% to 79,000 TEUs; to Cambodia, down 19.1% to 3,000 TEUs; and to Myanmar, down 6.5% to 1,900 TEUs.
