As of the end of October 2013, a total of 156 Japanese companies had made inroads in Myanmar, according to Teikoku Databank, Ltd. (TDB).

The number increased a remarkable 71.4% from a year earlier and tripled from three years earlier, when there were only 52 Japanese businesses operating in the Southeast Asian nation.

The Tokyo-based credit research company recently collected and analyzed data on Japanese enterprises doing business in Myanmar as of Oct. 31, focusing on growth in number, types of business and annual sales.

By type of business, 49 firms of the 156 were wholesalers, enjoying the largest share of the pie; 29, service providers; 27, manufacturers and 21, transport and communication service companies.

The number of service providers, manufacturers and transport and communication service companies had all more than doubled for the last one year.

By annual sales, 36 companies earn \100 million or more but less than \1 billion each, swelling a considerable 80% year on year.

As these figures show, small and midsize companies now account for a major part of the entire group.

TDB said that many more Japanese enterprises either have decided to business in Myanmar or considering doing so, anticipating the number will continue to grow.
