Container volume at India's major state-owned ports slipped 4.5 percent year in the first half of fiscal year 2013-14 (April - September 2013), but total cargo throughput was 2.3 percent higher, according to the latest traffic data released by the Indian Ports Association.
Box traffic at 12 state-owned ports for the first six months of fiscal year 2013-14 was estimated at 3.8 million TEUs, down from 3.9 million TEUs in the same period last year. Containerized cargo tonnage declined 5 percent from a year earlier to 57.8 million tons.
The volume of containers handled by Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), the country's largest container port, fell 4 percent to2.06 million TEUs followed by Chennai Port's 757,000 TEUs, down 6% on year and Kolkata Port's 298,000 TEUs, down 2.3%.
