Cargo throughput at 31 ports in South Korea totaled 672.21 million tons in the first half (January-June) of 2013, remaining nearly unchanged year on year from 672.24 million tons, according to statistics unveiled by the nation’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF).

Containerized shipments increased a slight 3.2% to 11.619 million TEUs. Their growth slowed, as the economic recoveries in the U.S. and Europe were not as brisk.

More specifically, exports and imports accounted for 6.926 million TEUs, going up 2.2%, and transshipment (T/S) cargoes, 4.574 million TEUs, up 7.3%.

Busan, the largest port in South Korea, was responsible for 8.808 million TEUs, which improved 2.9% from 8.559 million TEUs, enabling the port defend its titles as the world’s fifth-busiest container port.

Container lifting rose 2.6% to 1.092 million TEUs at Kwangyang.

Inchon handled 1.042 million TEUs, growing 7.6% thanks to increases in shipments traded to and from China and Southeast Asia. The port is likely to clear its goal of processing a total of two million TEUs this year.
