The composite Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) stood at 3,276.14 points in Week 32, up 2.2% from the previous week, marking two back-to-back weeks of growth, according to the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE).
On the east-west trades, spot rates for container exports from Shanghai were down 2.5% to $2,964 per TEU to Europe and down 3.4% to $4,048 per TEU to the Mediterranean but up 4.2% to $6,489 per FEU to the west coast of North America and up 2.6% to $9,290 per FEU to the east coast of North America.
On the north-south routes, ex-Shanghai rates were up 7.4% to $5,258 per TEU to the Middle East Gulf, up 2.4% to $2,215 per TEU to Australia and New Zealand, and up 8.9% to $6,238 per TEU to South America. To Southern Africa and East and West Africa, in contrast, they were up 2.5% to $2,723 per TEU and up 0.5% to $4,023 per TEU, respectively.
Within Asia, container exports from Shanghai were carried at $319 per TEU to Kansai, Japan, unchanged; at $323 per TEU to Kanto, Japan, unchanged; at $650 per TEU to Southeast Asia, down 0.9%; and at $170 per TEU to South Korea, down 1.7%.
The SCFI represents spot rates for container exports from Shanghai that do not include terminal handling charges (THCs), which was set at a baseline of 1,000 points on Oct. 16, 2009.
