The world five busiest container port rankings for 2012 remained unchanged according to recent cargo statistics announced by major ports.

Shanghai took the lead for the third consecutive year handling 31.74 million TEUs in 2012, up 2% from the previous year, followed by Singapore whose box throughput rose 6% from a year earlier to 31.65 million TEUs.

Ranked third was Hong Kong with volume of 23.10 million TEUs, representing a decline for the first time since 2009 when its box throughput plunged 14.1% after the Lehman Brothers crash. Shenzhen, ranked fourth, registered a slight increase of 1.6% to 22.94 million TEUs and Busan held its place as the fifth largest box port with throughput of 17.03 million TEUs, up 5.2% year on year.
