The combined volume of containerized shipments transported by major shipping companies on the intra-Asia trade (among 12 economies in the region) in March 2012 increased 10.9% year on year from 1,167,000 TEUs to 1,294,000 TEUs, enjoying a double-digit improvement for two months in a row.
Exports from Japan picked up 7.6% to 193,000 TEUs, achieving the first growth in five months, or since November 2011.
Imports to Japan were also brisk, rising 3.8% to 229,000 TEUs.
In the first three months (January-March), the total amounted to 3,480,000 TEUs, growing a double-digit 10.1% year on year from 3,160,000 TEUs.
Exports from Japan declined 2.3% to 503,000 TEUs, but imports to Japan climbed 3.9% to 612,000 TEUs.
