Containerized shipments handled at India's 13 state-owned gateway ports in fiscal 2011-12 ended on March 31 increased 3% from the same period in FY2010 to 7.77 million TEUs.

Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva), the busiest container port in the country set new record of 4.32 million TEUs, representing a 1.5% increase compared with 4.27 million TEUs for the previous year.

Chennai ranked second with throughput of 1.56 million TEUs, up 3% from a year earlier, followed by Kolkata which handled 551,000 TEUs, up 4.8% year on year.
