In February 2012, 2,796,300 TEUs of containerized shipments were exported from Asia, according to a report on container movement worldwide that was leased on April 8 by Container Trades Statistics Ltd. (CTS) of the U.K.

Asia, which suffered a year-on-year decline of 2.9% in exports in January, made a comeback, registering a double-digit growth of 15.57% from the 2,419,500 TEUs exported in February 2011.

It is analyzed the notable improvement was attributed to the fact that the Lunar New Year holidays were taken in January this year, unlike last year, when they were taken in February.

CTS, which focused on container traffic to and from Europe until last month and began handling global container throughput this month, added that imports to Asia were also favorable in February, rising 8.82% from 1,615,500 TEUs to 1,755,800 TEUs.

In the first two months, exports from and imports to Asia were both robust, enjoying double-digit increases, with the former surging 10.6% to 6,509,800 TEUs and the latter, 10.4% to 3,554,900 TEUs.

Freight rate indexes have also been on the rise since the beginning of this year.

As for other regions, exports from and imports to North America both marked double-digit improvements in February, said the CTS report.

Exports soared 10.57% to 1,189,300 TEUs, and imports were even better, swelling 21.69% to 1,433,900 TEUs.

Europe’s exports and imports were both steady, climbing 8.89% to 1,289,200 TEUs and 4.06% to 1,494,300 TEUs, respectively.
