Container throughput on the intra-Asia trade (among 12 Asian economies) improved from a year earlier in January 2012, going up 5.3% from 1,020,920 TEUs to 1,074,523 TEUs.
Exports from Japan decreased, having registered a year-on-year decrease for three months in a row, or since November 2011.
The total went down 2.6% to 140,000 TEUs due to the slowdown in the Asian economy, the inventory adjustment of electronic parts/component- and device-related commodities and the Chinese New Year, among other factors.
As for imports to Japan, those of transport equipment increased thanks to the appreciation of the Japanese yen and the recovery in production in Thailand.
However, also impacted negatively by the Chinese New Year, they nearly remained unchanged, growing a minute 0.1% to 195,000 TEUs, which was a drastic slowdown from the previous month, when they rose 12%.
On an annual scale, a total of 14,147,000 TEUs were moved on the intra-Asia trade in 2011, climbing 6.1% year on year from 13,334,000 TEUs.
Exports from Japan waned 6.1% to 2,069,000 TEUs, but imports to Japan were steady, hiking 5.3% to 2,510,000 TEUs.
