The total volume of containerized shipments handled at 64 ports in Japan in the first half (January-June) of 2011 grew 5.7% year on year to 8.57 million TEUs, according to statistics released recently by the Institute for Advanced Port Transportation of Japan.

In breakdown, the Big Five (Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe) were responsible for 6.674 million TEUs, going up 5.5% from a year earlier.

Container throughput at the Big 12 (the abovementioned five ports as well as Shimizu, Yokkaichi, Kitakyushu, Hakata, Chiba, Kawasaki and Shimonoseki) was 7.629 million TEUs, up 5.7%.

The other 52 ports processed a total of 941,000 TEUs, up 5.5%.

Exports of loaded containers from the 64 ports went down 2.7% to 2.826 million TEUs?2.121 million TEUs from the Big Five, down 3.6%; 2.567 million TEUs from the Big 12, down 2.7% and 258,900 TEUs from the other 52 ports, down 2%.

The 64 ports imported 3.99 million TEUs of loaded containers, up 8.7%?the Big Five, 3.174 million TEUs, up 8.5%; the Big 12, 3.577 million TEUs, up 8.5% and the other 52 ports, 411,000 TEUs, up 10.1%.
