The combined volume of containerized shipments handled by major shipping companies on the intra-Asia trade in October 2011 was 1.224 million TEUs, marking a double-digit increase of 12.5% from October 2010.

Exports from Japan to 11 other Asian countries and regions grew 7% to 181,000 TEUs, registering a year-on-year improvement for two months in a row, while imports accomplished a double-digit rise of 12.9% to 219,000 TEUs.

As for container movement to and from Thailand, which has been hit hard by floods since July, exports from Japan went down 2.2% to 23,000 TEUs, but imports picked up 2.1% to 24,000 TEUs.

On an accumulated scale, leading shipping lines moved a total of 11.714 million TEUs on the intra-Asia trade in the first 10 months of 2011, climbing 6.8% from the 10,971 million TEUs moved a year earlier.

Exports from Japan declined 5.8% to 1.72 million TEUs as they decreased year on year in the first half; on the other hand, imports hiked 4.9% to 2.071 million TEUs.
