In August 2011, a total of 14,457,800 TEUs of containerized shipments were transported to and from China, going up 10.1% year on year, according to a report compiled recently by the Ministry of Transport of China.

In breakdown, 12,964,300 TEUs were moved to and from coastal ports, up 9.3%, and 1,493,600 TEUs to and from inland river ports, up 17.4%.

Focusing on major ports, 2,770,000 TEUs were carried to and from Shanghai, up 5.3%; 2,133,000 TEUs to and from Shenzhen, down 4.5%; 1,347,700 TEUs to and from Ningbo-Zhoushan, up 9.2%; 1,297,000 TEUs to and from Guangzhou, up 24.3% and 1,085,600 TEUs to and from Qingdao, up 2.4%.

Meanwhile, South Korean ports handled 1,804,000 TEUs in August, which increased 8.2% from the 1,667,000 TEUs processed a year earlier. Transshipment (T/S) cargoes were robust, jumping 18.7% to 692,000 TEUs, which enjoyed a double-digit year-on-year increase for the sixth consecutive month.

Looking at major ports, container throughput at Busan ballooned 12.2% to 1,376,000 TEUs. T/S cargoes accounted for nearly half of the total, amounting to 661,000 TEUs. They increased 20%, remaining brisk from the previous month, when they swelled 22.3%.

On the other hand, container lifting was stagnant at Kwangyang, plunging 14% to 165,000 TEUs, as an all-time high of 192,000 TEUs were recorded at the port a year earlier.

Throughput was not favorable at Incheon either, which declined a minute 1% to 153,000 TEUs.
